Theman
Diaries!
First Impressions
I had
been meaning to try out this strange piece of
software I had recently heard of called wireplay.
So I downloaded the files, install and was off.
After
spending a few hours blasting away at quake 2 I
realised that this was just normal, there had to
be something else something that made wireplay
special and there it was MUD 2.
Another
quick download and read through some of the
documentation provided me with a brief portal to
the land of Mud 2. So as I had done earlier that
day I fired up wireplay but instead of clicking
quake I went for mud 2. The text interface took
me back to my interactive fiction days and the
style of commands was little different. I stood
there looking like a complete idiot trying to
talk to people while they just ignored me. Most
said, "Just wait
reset coming".
I
started to cry quietly and suddenly a message a
different message, a message in blue. It read
reset in 180 and some other stuff, which I can't
remember. I panicked thinking what have I done?
In
about 180 seconds time the game closed and
reopened again. I hit the p key and was in the
tearoom again. People arrived and left again, the
only person left was a woman (and me of course).
I spoke to her and she explained what had just
happened. She told me a reset was when all the
creatures called mobiles came back into the game.
She went on to explain stuff about the game and
advised me to look at the FAQ, which I did. It
provided me with a little more information and I
stormed out of the tearoom into the big wide
road.
About an hour after I left I was hopelessly lost.
I had followed a road up and then wondered off. I
picked up a pitchfork and a key. I came across a
innocent hedgehog and killed it to get points. A
bird flew by and I killed that to get points. I
knew that points were good and that I needed to
get them but I wasn't sure that killing little
creatures was the right way to do it. So I
searched for some of this treasure, got even more
lost, cried some more and quit the game to make
this web site.
Points Don't Make Me
Laugh
My
most recent adventure on wireplay was about 15
minutes long and gave me about 150 points. I'm
not clear on how I got these points since most of
the session was spent getting to grips with the
Val t and Val commands.
I
followed a tour at the start and chatted a lot in
the tearoom to people about the game. Finally I
left and walked around chatting to people and
moaning about the rain. I was looking for
treasure but all I came across was three keys
worth 0 or so the value command said. I
disconnected about 5 minutes later after finding
nothing of interest.
I
noticed as I disconnected the total of points I
had was 150? How did I get 150 points? The only
explanation I can find is the three keys I picked
up. I did nothing with them so were did the 150
come from? I was only online for 15 minutes so I
didn't get any bonuses nor was I on-line during
any special event.
An
explanation would be nice. (ERIC -
Just a note to any newbies here, you get bonuses
when a certain amount of mobiles are left in the
land (150, 100, 50, etc). I'm thinking that this
was what happened.)
I'm So Proud
I
would like to mention a player at the start of my
diary and that player is Yoda, a small beginner
player that took me back to when I started a few
weeks ago. (Although I have only played it four
times.) He didn't know very much about the game
and kept trying to pick fights with the other
players. Most of them were much harder them him,
well all of them apart from me .
I
left him to go and do some more exploring of the
wide world. I just walked around, went into a few
gardens etc. I came across this goat and I had no
weapons but I attacked it anyway. After several
minutes of attacking I won!!!! I can't remember
how many points I had but I got enough to go up a
level.
I ran
across the land in glee and came across a garden
with a trinket in it. I grabbed the flower and
rapidly clicked the swamp button. I got there
dropped the flower and gained about 42 points,
this was my day!!!
I
skipped back hoping to find some more treasure
and came across a zombie. It attacked me and
nearly killed me so I fled and lost 39 points, a
bad end to a very good journey. I returned to the
tearoom to tell Yoda about my victory (and okay
pick a fight with him like he wanted) but he was
gone. I have missed a little bit out of the
story. When I was going to the swamp I met a
player called Bastardo and he attacked me. He was
a higher level then me but I nearly killed him
and he fled, it was so cool!
Anyway
thanks to Bastardo for the points and thanks to
Yoda for the conversation, shame about your films
though.
Going Up In The
World
Yeoman
is my new MUD 2 title. I got it by killing some
fireflies picking up treasure and visiting the
spring. Yes I have found the remember his name. I
will gladly mention it if he can please going up
to yeoman I talked a lot about wizards and
witches to this person that thought it to flood
the mine. Nothing really has happened since
finding the spring. All I seem to do is go to the
spring get the point spring. This really nice guy
went through the directions but I can't e-mail me
or speak to me on-line. After was funny and then
go to the spring again.
Short Time
I met
several people that I knew on MUD 2. This was
last Thursday by the way. I met Gutbucket and
Rocko. The two main people who sent me answers to
the questions. As my knowledge of the MUD 2 world
continues to expand so does this web site.
Anyway
back to what happened. I spent most of my time in
the tearoom and talked to people, collecting
information for the web site. I walked around
shouted to people a bit and picked up stuff. I
lost about 169 points this session because this
guy kept walking up to me and then attacking me
for no reason. I hope this does not happen again.
I am
now realising that I haven't actually played MUD
2 proparly for ages, all I seem to do is talk to
people and make friends. See ya soon!
Up..Up..And Away!
Advancing
levels in MUD2 is probably the most important
thing to do. Anyway I'd like to talk about magic
and how to use it (or not to use it in my case).
I can now get fairly easily to the level of
warrior and was feeling a little suicidal as some
may put it. So I thought I go for the touchstone.
The
touchstone is the thing that turns you from
normal fighter to magic user (something essential
to get very high up in the game). I located the
cave of stars in the North Mountain and prepared
myself for either sudden demise or magical
powers. People who expected the sudden demise
option were now cheering me on. NOTE: Using the
touchstone at a low level like warrior is not
advisable unless you want to commit suicide or
take a very risky chance.
It
turned out that I was successful and became a
magic user although this was not to last long. I
couldn't work out whether I was meant to use the
magic or if it would work automatically. I kept
trying to ask people or use the help system but
to no result, I just couldn't use magic. I also
kept getting attacked by these zombies and things
and because I was too busy trying to work the
magic I died horribly at the hands of a zombie.
I was
dead, dead (turned back to a beginner) so all my
magic was gone. I have tried on several attempts
to return to be a magic user but I have died
every time.
Two Hours of
Mud
This
is the first time I had played MUD 2 for awhile
and so it took a while to get back into the
spirit.
First
thing I did was sip dj per usual to get me up to
protector. Then a few trips to the spring to get
to yeoman, where the trouble began. A player had
come to our (as in the players) attention as a PK
who picked on lesser players. He first attacked
me after a friendly chat and I fled (F O). I
returned to the tearoom to think things over and
do my favourite hobby, talking about MUD 2. There
I meet a very small amount of people who mused
with me over this PK and several people argeed to
gang up against him and off they trundled.
I was
left discussing MUD 2 to a beginner called Lyra
who may I say was a very nice person. We had met
just before when she accidenly attacked me, and
it really was an accident :-). It turned out this
was her first game and that she was being lead
around by Cloud. We went our seperate ways and I
killed a few things, only simple dragonflies etc.
However
the PK returned to try and attack me so I fled
into the mines which flooded killing me. From
there I worked my way up to warrior and I got a
message from Lyra, she was being attacked by the
PK (I'm not going to say his name). I got stuck
in the passages so got to her late and she was
killed along with me.
However
we both return and I commend her on this, on my
first few games I would of quit if I'd died at
any time. I fought up to warrior thanks to
joining a few fights with zombies, dwarfs and the
pesky parrot. I decided it was time to join a
house and after toying with JFW I went for the
MUD 2 beginners house ERM. I'd like to thank
Astral for her help in getting me in.
Then
we had a reset which I used to grab a coffee, hey
we have to go to the 'real world' sometimes :-)
From
then I used the spring to almost get to swordsman
but my crowning glory of this game was when the
PK attempted to kill me but even though I was a
level below he had to flee! HAHA! Also this
moment showed the close community of MUD 2 as
when attacked a called for help and people came
pouring in to attack him for me.
The Easy Way Up
Up
yet another level today thanks to the frowned
upon techinque of 'patching'. Basically the
technique involves continually eating cabbages
until you get to desired level.
To do
this first you must locate the cabbage patch, do
it yourself or get some to tell you since I can't
remember. From there you must eat about ten
cabbages and then be sick otherwise you can't eat
any more. Each ccbbage increases you experince
points so it's easy to get to high levels.
An
easy way to perform this task is to type eat
food,,,,,,,,,, sick and then press CTRL + L.
Thanks to Rocko the Super-hero for showing me
this :-).
Be
warned there are dangers to doing this for
example being stick loses you stamina so you will
die (although unlikely) if you do it too much.
Another problem in doing this is that you are
left exposed this is enhanced by the fact that
this practise to frowned upon making you a siting
duck. You cannot do this after you get to hero
level so from then on your on your own!
At
around Hero level the 'hand-outs' appear to run
dry, the spring is pretty ineffective and
patching no longer works. This is kind of scary
for me as fighting is not something I'm good at
but we'll see how it goes. My next few diaries
should be interesting as it will probably involve
me fighting monsters I have no chance of
defeating.
