One - Getting Started
Right so what is
Mud2? Well (in my opinion) it is the most
engrossing multiplayer world invented to date. It
is also text-based, with the best graphics ever
seen - the ones inside your head. Imagination
plays a big part in your game. That is your only
limitation :0)
To get started on
Mud2 on Wireplay then you must download the
software here. Altogether it is about 5mb - 4mb
for the Wireplay client and 1mb for the Mud2
software. I'm not sure about instructions for mac
users (since I don't have a mac...gg) so see the
gameplay site for more details.
Okay lets then
assume that you've downloaded and installed the
software. Wireplay should automatically detect
the game and add it to your games list. You must
connect to the net using Wireplay's own ISP WIREPLAY
DIRECT. No other ISP will work until the
new Wireplay software comes out later this year.
When prompted, choose a username and password
(this has no bearing on your mud2 player name)
and enter the POWER PLAY arena.
The Open Play arena doesn't have mud2. Select
Mud2 from the games list (if you want to see how
many players there are on then look at the number
of slots. There are 101 slots I think,
so if you see only 84 slots available then there
should be 17 people in the game.
You have now
entered the game......
Right now we're in
you are asked to choose a password for your mud2
account. Choose an easy one because it's a lot of
hassle if you ever forget it, and I'm sure
Richard won't be too happy with you :0). Since
it's your first time, you'll be asked if you want
to use colour. Say yes! It's not as good without
it, I think. Now you should be presented with a
screen that says OPTION:. From
here you can do things like check your mail,
examine your personas and read the message board.
For now though, I'm sure you will want to just
play the game so type P, hit
return and you're in.
This bit is great.
You get to choose your player name, or continue
with one you started at another time. Do try to
choose something original as most of the popular
ones have gone (damn you Gandalf...gg). I settled
for Eric, as it is a character out of one of my
Terry Prattchett books. Incidentally this wasn't
the first name I chose. I tried loads (cos I'm
very unoriginal heehee). Eric does fine. Also
with choosing player names comes another twist.
It has been said by some people that aggresive
names (like DeathStar or Murderguy or whatever)
will result in people attacking you more often.
If you choose a friendlier name (like Starburst
or Fluffybunny) people will more often than not
NOT attack you. Hmm. By the way Starburst has
been taken. By me.
The name must be
10 letters or less, and be letters only, with no
spaces or anything.
The Fountain of Wizdom.
Section
Two - The Tearoom
So you've chosen
your name. Great! Now you will find yourself an a
quaint tearoom. This is a busy place for mudders
as it is where people come to relax and chat over
a nice cup of tea. Don't worry - no one can
attack you or hurt you in the tearoom (except the
wizzes, who know better anyway), newbie or not.
So what can you so
here? Well not much really. Just take your time
and get used to reading the text, which can be
fast at times. You can always scroll back up if
you miss anything. If anyone is in here with you
(if you type LOOK it'll give you
a description of the room you're in, and who is
here with you) why not give them a friendly wave?
You can express your actions and emotions well in
Mud2 (hard to do in Quake when you're on the
receiving end of a rocket...gg). Just type them
in.....some examples are WAVE, LAUGH,
GIGGLE, SMILE and so on and so forth.
Try them out - people like cheery persona's. You
can do almost anything in mud using this system,
which is called EMOTES. Try some
of your own.
So how do you get
out of this place then? Well the only exit is to
the NORTH. But strict rules mean
you can't leave the tearoom without at least 1
point. So how do you get a point? This is your
first puzzle. Remember where you are. Remember
what you're carrying. If you don't know what you
are carrying type I or INVENTORY
to see what you are currently holding.
Skeleton1. All bones and
no brains.
Section
Three - Communication
Let's assume for
now that you're having trouble with this first
puzzle. What can you do? Well first try and LOOK
around the room. If there is anyone else here
then maybe they will you the answer, or give you
a clue at least. In the examples, we will pretend that
you have chosen Starburst as your persona name.
EXAMPLE
ONE: Someone is in the room! Great!
So erm, how do we talk to them?
Well to start off with try and
attract their attention with a simple and very
friendly WAVE. This isn't
neccesary, just polite. Then type SAY
"Hello". With the SAY command
everything you type in between the speech marks
will be heard by people in the same room as you.
In this case, Hello. If the
person is friendly (usually will be) then they
will probably reply. You should see something
like Eric the Sorcerer says
"Hiya!". Yay! Your first
conversation in mud is about to begin. So then
reply. SAY "I'm stuck in the room.
Can you help me get a point please?".
Or something to that effect. You can now talk to
anyone in the same room! Of course, Eric the
Sorcerer would probably give you some clue to the
solution, but it's fun if you learn it yourself.
Hehe.
EXAMPLE
TWO: Oh no! No-one is in the room!
What now? Well find out which uninvisible players
are in the game by using
the WHO command. Pick one of
them (if you see a wizard then ask them, cos the
wizards are the game's management and will be
only too glad to help any newbies). You can talk
directly (and privately) to someone by using TELLS.
What you do is type the person's name followed by
whatever you want to say to them in speech marks.
Let's say I'm playing. To speak to me directly
type ERIC "Hi I'm a newbie - can you
help me please?". If I'm not under
any spells or in the middle of a fight I'll reply
almost instantly. You would see Eric the
Sorcerer tells you "Sure - what's the
problem?". With this method, you
can have private conversations with anyone you
want.
EXAMPLE
THREE: Okay so the person who you
spoke to didn't reply, for one reason or another.
Maybe they're deaf, or are in an awkward
situation. You are still stuck in the same place.
What else can you do? Well you could ask everyone
in the game at once if you want. If you use the SHOUT
command, everyone who can hear will hear you. Of
course, you might wake someone up, but if you ask
nicely enough they should be glad to help.
SHOUT "Hi everyone,
any chance of any help please (Starburst)?"
is something you might type. You
don't have to put your name in, but that way
people can contact you privately without having
to shout over the whole land, because shouting is
anonymous. The other players will only hear A
male voice in the distance shouts "Hi
everyone". Or
a female voice if your persona
is of the other sex. As
well as shouting you can also YELL,
BELLOW, ROAR, SCREAM or even YODEL
if you feel like.
With these three
examples we have covered most of the
communication issues in the game, although we
haven't yet touched upon issues like swearing and
spamming. As a general rule of thumb, if you can
turn BBC1 on and hear swearing then it's okay to
use it in the game. Basically after the 9:30pm
watershed then.
Any extreme
profanities will result in a direct FOD
from one of the wizzes. Which means FINGER
OF DEATH. Which means say goodbye to
your new persona. Instant death. Nasty.
Any spamming might
also earn you a FOD.
