Tharg's Not-Quite-Newbie Guide

Ok. Here's an excellent article I recieved some time ago from Tharg, but never had a chance to put up. Thanks for sending it in mate.

Hey there Eric,

I don't know you, but I'm sure we have seen each other about in the Land.

I am a not-quite-newbie, and I thought I might share some of my limited learnings with the readers of your site.  They are, I feel, suited to those who know about springs, cabbages and touchstones, but not much else to help them keep their first sorcerer:

First: Type id, type fb, press F2, unless you know any better.  Get used to them.

Second:  Look for "loopholes."  The game seems to be designed for them.  Many items are only occasionally useful on they're own, but suddenly are immensely powerful with another item.  I figured out a way to get to hero easily (in about 20 mins) when I had a set to myself.  I am sure there are better ways, but mine involved using three items to reduce the time taken to do it an obvious way.  I'm pretty sure it could be done by substituting one of the items I used for another.  Also figure out ways to use ctrl L to your advantage.

Third: When you dare the touchstone there may be an item to help you.  I have never failed with a champion (I must have done about eight times) but I have always used a certain item and have listened to what people say (there are a few theories) and have always done it at a certain place.

Fourth: If you die ... don't get too distraught.  It would have happened eventually anyway.  Figure out your mistake, whether it was attacking something out of your league, the fact that your adversary had a useful bit of kit or you not fleeing soon enough.  You will learn from these incidents

Fifth: If a pk attacks you, flee.  Seriously.  Flee.  Now.  Curiously, pks tend to be those that have got hold of the items that help pks, and they rarely attack unless the odds are in their favour.  I have noticed that I feel more adverse to fleeing when fighting a persona than when fighting a mobile.  Some kind of stupid pride thing.  I am sure that there is nothing a pk likes more than a persona who doesn't like to flee.  I reckon fleeing whenever you get below 30 stam is sensible.  And you may not want to risk sleeping if there are pks about.  Oh, and learn from them.  One day soon, you'll be getting your revenge.

Sixth:  GET A PP PERSONA.  I had a pp, and he opened my eyes to the world of the necro.  My first three necros were all killed within a few days of graduating from sorcerer.  I got a prelate (a pp necro) and all of a sudden I had the opportunity to try out all these spells without having to worry about how long it would take me to type "drop boat.unkeep all.keep pick.use pick.drop all".  My fourth necromancer lasted about a week and a half!

Seventh: There are about 5 items that I know of that are sought out at the very beginning of each set.  They go instantly.  Four help you in fights, and one leads to you getting loads of points if you know how.  Find out about them.

Eighth: One more ... SNOOP IF YOU CAN.  I have only managed two snoops so far, but both have been sooo useful.  You learn a lot.
