Tom's Newbie Help

Ok. A cool newbie guide from Tom, by the looks of it the first in a series of many! Let's hope so!NEW PLAYER HELP: ** you will need a pen and paper **

Hiya all, Tom here with this installment of the New player help. This time I'm gonna concentrate on two main parts to the game and as usual some keyboard commands as well.

a) Getting some points really quick. (sounds good doesnt it :) )
b) Getting a glow, without hassling the magic users. :)
c) Simple commands and keyboard short cuts.

** Getting some points really quick **

When you die, as so often happens, you have the inevitable climb back up the levels to get to where you were. At Protector/Yeoman its not really worth attacking anything as you'll get beaten 9 times out of 10.
There is an easy way to get the 800 points needed for 'Warrior' and most of you will have heard of it, if not done it. Its called 'The Spring'. No not the BOING! BOING! type, rather the one that sprouts water from the ground. (Frostbite suddenly has visons of loads of new players bouncing around the land saying 'Damn Tom, he told me this'd get me some points.. last time i listen to that old fool! )
OK the way it works is like this. Deep in the North Mountain is the dwarf mine and tucked away in that is a spring. The spring has magical refreshing properties. By drinking from the spring you gain points dependant upon your level. For example: I go to the spring as a persona with 0 points. I drink from it and gain 200 points. This gets me up a level and then the next time i drink it gets me 100 points. Eventually i go up another level and then when i drink i get 50 points. etc etc

I'll give you the directions from the Rapids. The Rapids is just north of the swamp.

North 10 times Gets you to the Railway track.
East 5 times
North once (It will get dark now, unless you have a light source. ie a 'glow)
East twice (Make sure you're NOT carrying a lit brand at this point, dont ask why... just trust me :) )
South 3 times (Told you about that brand didnt I (gg) )
East once Gets you to Entrance to Dwarven realm.
South East 4 times Gets you to the Spring.

This gets you to the spring once you are there, just type DRINK and way hay! you've done it! Now go do it again :) By doing this again and again you can get to warrior in 13 spring visits. After this point its not really worth doing it any more.

** Getting a glow **

Glows are an essential part of the game if you want to venture inside some of the darker areas of the land. There are lots of different ways of seeing in the dark, from a passive insect, various items, and this one way im gonna tell you about. Basically a 'glow' makes you persona glow thereby enabling you to see, and others to see you, in the dark.
Upstairs in the attic of the Inn there is a circle inscribed in the floor. Dropping an item of treasure into it will make the circle glow. Then when you step into the circle it transfers the glow to you. Now you have a use for all those bits of treasure that are worth minus points.
Getting to the inn..
Once again starting from the Rapids.

North until you get to: Gorse

Then you need these directions:-
East 6 times (gets you to Public Bar).
Northeast once
South once
Up once
IN lots (keep going IN until you cant go any further, youll be
in the attic now)
North once
West once (this is where the circle is)

Drop a piece of treasure into the circle... and 'Enter Circle'.
And thats all there is to it. To get back out again, just keep typing 'Out'.

Keyboard shortcuts:
Try the following things to see what they do.
i) Press CONTROL and L after typing in a command.
ii) Type in a command and before you press ENTER , press CTRL X
iii) A few other commands, try pressing F1, F2 and F3 to see the various
screen layouts.

Ok thats about enough help for this week. If you havent yet got the glow from the Inn, try it. Once youve done it a few times you'll find it a lot faster and less hassle than bugging the magic users.
At this point Id like to sincerely thank Cat the wizard for his permission to give the help on the Spring and getting a Glow. Next week I will bring you the solution to all the mausoleum puzzles and how to do all eight tasks including the secret 9th one. (I think NOT!) (G) Seriously though, next time I'll probably be discussing some more commands and a how the spells system works. Prepare for it to get technical. If you want to read up on this there are two help files you'll need: SPELLS and SPELLSHELP. To access them just type them in when in either the land or the tea room.
Seeing as some of you are getting magic for the first time now, this should help a bit.

Stay Frosty people and remember: Nothing falls into a closed hand. :)

Tom.
